A Wellness & Sustainability Team (WST) has been established in order help prepare Oscar Mayer Magnet School students for a lifetime of sustainable living through education and the day-to-day practices of the school. The underlying basis for our team includes a commitment to care for ourselves (our health and well-being); for others (across cultures, distances and generations); and for the planet (both locally and globally).
All members of the Mayer community are involved: administrators, building engineers, teachers, parents and most importantly, the students. Our hope is that this group involvement will spread into the community at large.
Currently the goals of the WST are divided into the following four areas:
1) Wellness: Recognize the connection between healthy eating and academic potential and long-term well-being.
★Provide healthy, local, sustainable food for our students.
★Develop our school grounds in ways that help students learn about the natural world and sustainable living.
★Incorporate healthy growing and eating lessons into our curriculum.
2) Energy Conservation/ Renewable Energy: Acknowledge that our natural resources are limited and make efforts to be a model for energy efficiency and renewable energy when possible.
3) Water Conservation: Recognize that water too is a precious resource and needs to be respected. Through simple and engaging programs we will reduce our usage and raise awareness.
4) Purchasing and Waste: Work to minimize waste and purchase responsibly when possible.
It is with great pride and pleasure that we work on these and future initiatives at Oscar Mayer Magnet School and we look forward to growing our team with like-minded parents who can bring their own ideas and expertise to the table thereby focusing on making Oscar Mayer Magnet School a healthy, safe and sustainable environment for current and future students.
We are always looking for help. If you have questions, or are interested in joining our team, please feel free to contact us.
