About Us
Friends of Mayer is the parent organization committed to furthering the mission of Oscar Mayer Magnet School through providing in-school support, spearheading fundraising, and organizing special events throughout the school year. Working side by side with Principal Konieczny, her outstanding staff of administrators and teachers, and the Local School Council, Friends of Mayer is committed to volunteering to help our children. The time we spend, and the money we raise, goes directly to benefit the students at our school.
Recent contributions from Friends of Mayer include:
- $200,000 given to the school, to fund teaching positions for the 2011-2012 school year
- Through our Wellness and Sustainability team, reducing our paper waste by 19 pounds per day and our food waste by over 160 pounds per day, with the changes enacted and owned directly by our students
- Planting of the award-winning Oscar Mayer student garden, with plants, fruits, vegetables, and native Illinois plants
- Funding the expansion of our sports programs, providing opportunities for many more students
- Holding our third annual Wellness-in-Motion Walk-a-thon, in which all students participated and during which over $63,000 was raised.
With CPS cuts, more so than ever we own our future – for our children, our school, and our community! The things we do as Friends of Mayer are designed to enhance the sense of community within the school, providing an opportunity for families to come together as neighbors and friends, with a common focus and sense of purpose. That is really what Friends of Mayer is all about.
In an effort to enhance the learning experiences for our children and create a stronger sense of community, each Oscar Mayer Magnet family is expected to commit a minimum of four volunteer hours to the school during the school year. Friends of Mayer is committed to creating volunteer opportunities for every single family and all talents, with organizational support and training as necessary. Whether parent or community member, we would welcome all of you as members of Friends of Mayer, or in any area where you would like to volunteer.
